Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the fluid and filter in my transmission?

Depending on what type of vehicle you have, the recommended service interval may vary. Because of the complexity of today’s transmissions, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association(ATRA) recommends servicing  your transmission  every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Servicing the transmission includes making all the applicable adjustments, replacing the filter and topping it off with new transmission fluid.

How much will it cost to rebuild my transmission?

Many times when a transmission is acting up it can be caused by a number of things that don’t even require removal of the transmission. If there is a problem with your transmission, the source of the problem can be one of hundreds of possibilities and degrees. Before making an assumption that the transmission needs to be replaced, a thorough diagnosis is needed.

Do I need to flush my transmission?

Flushing the transmission is a good and sometimes necessary addition to a transmission service. But it does not replace the need of servicing the transmission with new filter and proper adjustments.

How often should I change my engine oil?

Time and mileage of an oil change varies depending on the manufacturer. Usually it is recommended between 3,000 and 7,000 miles. We find that the average person does not need to change their vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles. While each vehicle is different, we find most vehicles are fine with oil changes at 5,000-mile intervals.

How do I know if I have a transmission problem?

Today’s transmissions are complex and completely computer controlled. A transmission problem can show up with many different symptoms or sometimes with no symptoms at all. If your vehicle’s engine races, it lacks power, makes strange noises or shows a “check engine” light, have it checked out as soon as possible.

Is a check engine light only an indication of an engine problem?

No, a check engine light is a warning light for the transmission as well. If your “check engine” or “service engine soon” light comes on, bring it to the shop so we can determine what is going on. Many times it is a minor problem.

Is it important to change my timing belt at the recommended interval?

Yes. If the timing belt breaks the engine will stop completely. On some vehicles if the timing belt breaks while driving, it can cause severe engine damage.

What is a tune-up?

The phrase tune-up is very broad in coverage. Not all vehicles need the same tune-up. Depending on how well the vehicle has been maintained, a tune-up may simply involve changing the oil and air filter. A tune-up basically means bringing the maintenance up to date.

Do I have to return to the dealer for my scheduled maintenance to maintain my warranty?

No, you can take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility for your routine maintenance to keep your manufacturer’s warranty in effect.

Should I take my transmission out of overdrive when towing a trailer?

Yes, overdrive in an automatic transmission is not intended for towing. It is intended for use as a fuel economy gear for the weight of the vehicle only.
